Type A Source Transport Container
A Type A Radiation Source Transport Container is a specialized packaging designed to safely transport radioactive materials that pose a limited risk to the public and the environment. These containers comply with international safety regulations set by bodies such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and national regulatory authorities like AERB (India), NRC (USA), and CNSC (Canada).
- Designed for Type A Quantities: Used to transport sealed and unsealed radioactive sources that do not exceed the A1 (for special form radioactive material) or A2 (for normal form radioactive material) limits defined by IAEA.
- Robust Construction: Made of steel, lead, or other radiation-shielding materials, often with impact-resistant linings to protect against leaks, shocks, and environmental conditions.
- Leakproof & Shielded: Ensures that radiation exposure is within permissible limits and prevents contamination during transit.
- Regulatory Compliance: Must pass a series of tests, including drop tests, water spray tests, penetration tests, and stacking tests, to demonstrate its durability and safety.
- Medical Sector: Transporting radiopharmaceuticals used in nuclear medicine and cancer treatment.
- Industrial Use: Carrying radiation sources for non-destructive testing (NDT), thickness gauging, and radiography.
- Research & Nuclear Facilities: Moving radioactive materials between laboratories, power plants, and waste disposal sites.
Type A containers are critical for the safe and regulated movement of radioactive materials, ensuring protection for handlers, transport personnel, and the environment.
